George Bell

  • "The fans can kiss my purple butt!" (Actually, he didn't say "butt"; that's just what the papers reported.)
  • Deliberately moved slowly on balls hit into the left field corner, as he knew they would be doubles anyway.
  • Somebody used to ring a bell when he came up.
  • During his feud with Jimy Williams, he would often overthrow the cutoff man on potential plays at the plate, as he wanted to prove that he could throw runners out.
  • Wore a small hat so that it would fly off when he ran.
  • Couldn't hit Mike Boddicker.
  • Headline after his 3 HR on opening day 1988: "Ding...Ding...Ding".
  • Charged the mound after being thrown at by Bruce Kison, and attempted to karate-kick him.
  • Didn't take practice swings at the plate; he just waggled his bat a few inches above the plate.
  • Had a distinctive little hop after checking his swing.
  • Asked the umpire to check the ball every time it bounced into the dirt.
  • Often let the first pitch go by.
  • Used to do a tongue roll after every pitch.
  • Often interrupted the game to have eye drops administered to him by Tommy Craig.
  • Became extremely frustrated during the Jays' 1987 collapse; tried to hit the ball out of the park on every at-bat.
  • Some people believe that Bell could have caught Larry Herndon's home run in the Jays' 1-0 loss on the final game of the 1987 season.
  • Bell, Moseby and Barfield were born within two weeks of one another in 1959. (Before game 1 of the 1985 ALCS, I saw a poster reading "1959: The Year The Pennant Was Born".)
