- Fans would cry "Er-nie! Er-nie!" when he came to the plate in key situations.
- Pulled everything to right field.
- Sometimes was driven to one knee by the force of his swing.
- Hit a home run to help spark the Jays' comeback from 10 runs down at Fenway.
- Hit a home run off Bruce Kison after the George Bell karate kick incident, and yelled things at him all the way around the bases.
- Came up with a reputation as a good-glove, no-hit type. It took him a couple of years to get untracked, but when he did he always hit thereafter, becoming the bat in a bat/glove platoon.
- Roy Hartsfield apparently didn't like him.
